Top 10 Resources For London Fun

I often get asked by friends ‘Where did you find out about this stuff?’ when I’m dragging them to a new exhibition, making them sit in the nosebleed section for a theatre show, visiting a food truck or walk around the countryside. So I thought I would share my Top 10 Resources for fun in London.

  1. Yplan

This app has led me to discover some great nights out – champagne after dark at the Aquarium, comedy shows and music festivals selling last minute tickets. Its an easy to use app that means you can plan things last minute and book with two clicks on your phone. It also has a referral code so get refering and you can get yourself some free nights out.

Number 36 – National Theatre

Despite seeing a lot of theatre during my time in London, I had never quite made it the National Theatre so with the clock ticking down on my time in London it was time to tick off Number 36.

When looking for tickets I was happy to see that Treasure Island was playing. It was a favourite book of mine from when I was younger and I am a bit fan of The Muppets version so I was looking forward to seeing it. I opted for the £15 tickets thinking even if I’m in the nosebleeds I knew the story so it wouldn’t be so bad. Once I got there though I was surprised to find that I was sitting in the very front row. Yes ok, so I was at the very side of the stage, but it was rounded so I think I had a pretty good view despite occasionally looking at the back of the actors heads.

Number 21 – Whitechapel Gallery

Its been awhile since I have done anything on the Top 100 list but don’t be surprised if you see a few posts coming up in the next few days with me plowing my way through the final few. Why? Well because I’m sad to say I am moving back home to Oz and I’ve only got a few weeks left in London. Sad days I know but even more reason to explore as much of this city as I can!

My most recent trip was to number 21 the Whitechapel Gallery. Located, in you guessed it -Whitechapel, I actually decided to tick this one off the list in style and do it as part of ‘First Thursdays‘. On the first thursday of every month, 130 galleries host a free late night where you can wander around East London and see as much art as you can. First stop however should be the Whitechapel Gallery so you can pick up a map or join the walking tour.

Number 34 – Dulwich Picture Gallery

It had been awhile since I had ticked off an activity in my Top 100 book and since it was the Sunday before heading back to work for the new year I though it was the perfect afternoon to go exploring. Rather than heading into the city we decided to walk over to Dulwich Picture Gallery.

Number 65 – Wembley Stadium

Its been awhile since I got to tick off one of my London Top 100’s but after a long break its time to report back on number 65 – Wembley Stadium. To be honest I was a little worried I wouldn’t be able to manage this one without paying for a stadium tour (which to be honest isn’t super up there on my to do list) so when I heard the NFL was coming to Wembley I thought what better reason to go to the stadium and try something new.

Number 86 – Royal Academy of Arts

I have been seeing the advertisements for the The Royal Academy of Arts Sensing Spaces exhibit for months now and before it finished this Sunday I finally got around to booking tickets.

The exhibit was based around Architecture Reimagined so I was interested in seeing what was in store. The RA had sent through an email earlier in the week letting us know they encourage us to get immersed in the exhibits we were free to touch, sit on, climb around them as well as taking as many photos as we wanted. Its not often you get encouraged to that at any exhibit so I was even more curious as to what was there.

Number 19 – Hit The Shops in Marylebone

Ten minutes walk from Oxford Street is another shopping street, however this one isn’t full of a thousand tourists walking slowly with shopping bags in tow. No, Marylebone High Street feels more like a high street in a cute little village. Most of the shops found along the high street are high end chain stores or cute little boutiques and while I would have loved to done them justice and shopped up a storm – most of them were not my kind of style. Which probably saved me a lot of money!

We wandered through the high street checking out what was on offer in way of shops and menus at the cafes and pubs before heading to the farmers markets held there every Sunday. The markets were full of fresh produce and we could have shopped up a storm.  There are also markets held just off the high street on Saturdays as well, but we will have to visit those another time.

Number 54 – Geffrye Museum

Ever wondered what living rooms looked like in the 1600’s? No me either, but I was still looking forward to checking out the Geffrye Museum. Known as the Museum of the home, I was looking forward to learning some cool facts about how Londoners lived then and now.

The first section of the museum is just one long walkway set up like a time line where you can walk through the different eras examples of rooms. It was pretty crowded when we went and to be honest the timelines weren’t that gripping to read. I spent most of my time looking through each room to see what the furniture was like and trying to imagine sitting on the uncomfortable furniture. I was a bit disappointed that there wasn’t much information about how the design evolved. It was just examples of rooms and how they used them.

Number 59 – Eat Well For Less

Eating out in London has always been one of its main draw cards for me. While I wouldn’t call myself a foodie – I definitely love a good meal out with friends. So when I saw eating out for less was one of the things to do in the book I thought it would be a synch to get this one ticked off my list. However upon further inspection the places that they recommend were generally a bit pricey. I mean you would eat well – but for less? I guess it depends on your definition of ‘less’ is!

Number 95 – Sea Life London Aquarium

I’ve been wanted to tick this one off my list for awhile now but the thoughts of hundreds of kids and tourists and the relatively high entry price (compared to the other museums that London has to offer) has put me off. However when looking through last minute Valentines Day ideas on YPlan I stumbled across Sea Life London Aquarium ‘Afterdark’. Basically an event tailored to those of us who like to do things with a bit a booze!
