Top 10 Favourite Trips To Europe

One of the main reasons I moved over to London was to be close to Europe and spend my time traveling. I think I’ve done a pretty good job of using my annual leave, bank holidays and weekends to see as much as I can. After visiting 22 different countries in Europe its pretty hard to narrow it down to just 10.

  1. Russia

Before moving over to Europe I had never really considered Russia as a top destination but after hearing a friend rave about her fantastic time there and being tempted by a cheap EasyJet flight I was keen to check it out. Six days and two Russian cities later I had had a trip of a lifetime with six other girlfriends. Moscow and St Petersburg were so different to the rest of Europe, with amazing history and culture. If its not already – put it on your to do list.

Scouser for the Weekend

A weekend in Liverpool might not sound like the most glamorous weekend getaway but it was one I had wanted to do all the same. I love exploring other UK cities and I hadn’t been up North in awhile. James took a little bit of convincing to come with me but with cheap train fares and promise of some Beatles history he caved in and came along.

On the loose in Lisbon

A friend of mine was turning 30 and such a big birthday calls for a big celebration so we decided to have a weekend away somewhere sunny. We tossed up a few ideas before settling on Lisbon, Portugal after getting several recommendations from friends.

We arrived in Lisbon and immediately felt the heat. It is the kind of heat where you can feel it hit you in a wave as you step out of the air conditioning. Coming from a ‘summer’ in the UK it was such a treat but as we wandered the hilly streets trying to find out hostel it became less fun as we became more and more sweaty.

Long Boat

Its that time of year again – the first May bank holiday. When we have our first day bank holiday in months and the few first rays of warm sun shining through the UK weather. As you know I often try to make the most of my bank holidays but after our adventures in New York we weren’t quite ready for another trip away so we spent the bank holiday a little closer to home and explored the UK.

Along with two friends Lisa and Simon, James and I hired a canal boat from Kate Boats based in Warwick. We headed up on the Saturday morning and picked up our boat ‘Rebecca’. A long houseboat with with two ‘bedrooms’, a full working bathroom and kitchen. It was the perfect way to do something new while exploring more of the UK.

Cottage in the Country

I’ve been so lucky in the time I’ve been living overseas that I’ve had people to come and visit me but I am even luckier that my both my immediate family and extended family all decided to come and visit at the same time.  A cross-continent family reunion can’t happen just anywhere so we decided to really make a time of it and hire a cottage down in Devon.

We found a lovely place called Dunsford, just 20 minutes from Exeter where we found two cottages close by to each other, where we could while away the hours in the Devon countryside. Barnfield Cottage where we stayed was the perfect mix of modern amenities and old english charm and was a great base for us to explore all the area had to offer.

Canterbury Tales

It was that time of the year again – August Bank Holiday weekend! This time of year is often met with equal pleasure and delight – a day off work followed by the aching depression that means its the last public holiday until Christmas. Similar to those other travellers desperate to squeeze as much travel and sunshine into my life during summer, I was desperate to go away for the weekend.

The minor hitch was that I had left this one up to James my wonderful – but not always the best planner – boyfriend. As the weeks crept up to the August bank holiday I kept hinting at places I’ve always wanted to go both in the UK and in Europe and it wasn’t until 2 weeks before the date I realised he hadn’t actually planned anything. Well, I’m not proud to say it, but there was a bit of a tantrum with an ‘its not faaaaiiirr everyone else is going awaaaayy’.

So after lots of whining at my end, an exasperated James finally booked us our getaway and I am pleased to say it was a fabulous UK weekend away. Our journey started bright and early on the Sunday morning as we caught the train from London Bridge down to Broadstairs – a seaside town in Kent. It was exactly how you would imagine a British summer seaside town that actually has a beach. And by beach I mean sand – not the uncomfortable pebbles of Brighton.

Summer in Krakow

Last summer a friend of mine came to visit me in London. Whilst she was here we thought we would have a summer escape to the continent – so she could do some more travel and I could visit somewhere new and exciting. Many places were tossed up – a week in the Greek Islands? Spain? Or Prague? Finally we settled on Krakow and, I have to say, I was stoked as it was pretty high on my to-travel list.

We decided to spend 4 nights there to give us the chance to fit in as many of the tourist attractions and cultural experiences we could. Our first afternoon was spent hanging out in the local town square buying Polish dumplings and beer from the food stalls, visiting the cloth market, resisting buying heaps of amber jewellery, and walking through the cobbled streets.  We were so lucky that we had a stunning blue sky and warm sunshine in which to do our exploring.

From Russia With Love: St Petersburg

St Petersburg – what a city! About 5 minutes after arriving in St Petersburg I had already decided it was my favourite out of the two Russian cities we visited. While Moscow was interesting, it was also very concrete, large and bleak. Whereas in St Petersburg just walking between the metro station and our hostel we saw more colourful buildings, canals and the people just seemed friendlier.

From Russia With Love: Moscow

Like many of my European adventures, my trip to Russia was inspired by an airline deal. EasyJet were advertising £50 flights to Moscow – what better excuse to go visit Russia? Originally planned for a long weekend, once my friend Kim and I started looking into the practicalities and what Russia had to offer, we realised that there was no way we could do this one in 3 days. So our trip extended from a few days in Moscow to a week with a visit to St Petersburg too. Then, once we realised the flights home from St Petersburg were super expensive, we thought we’d jump over the border into Estonia, check out Tallin, then fly home from there. Once we started talking about our baltic adventure the list of travel buddies suddenly jumped from two to six.

33 Hours in Stockholm

I’m a sucker for a Ryanair sale and when I found flights return from London to Stockholm for £25 I jumped at them and encouraged my friends Ainsley and Lauren to tag along too. The only downside of these flights were that they left at 6am Saturday morning and got home at 11pm on the Sunday evening. This meant a wake up call at 2am to get a taxi to the bus station, a bus to the airport for our bleary eyed flight.

We arrived in Stockholm by 9am and were ready and raring to check out the city. We stayed at City Backpackers Hostel and in a lovely turn up for the books we got upgraded us to an apartment. Which mean not only did we get our own kitchen but we also had our own sauna! Tempted to stay in there  and sleep we thankfully resisted and headed out to check out the city and we were lucky enough to get a gorgeous sunny day.

Stockholm is made up of many little islands so we wandered down and crossed over a bridge into the old town where we wandered the little streets, found a cafe and grabbed some food. Unfortunately it wasn’t Swedish meatballs but a kebab as food in Sweden is expensive! We then decided to go on a boat cruise that sailed us around all the little islands so we could check out a few of the hotspots. After an hour on the boat we disembarked at ‘The Vasa’ where we spent an hour or so wandering through the museum about the viking ship that was discovered in the Baltic Sea. It was interesting to see the viking ship, read about the history of the vikings and also the intense recovery of this historic vessel. It was one of the best things we did!

We got used to having our feet firmly on the ground so we decided to wander around the city centre to see what else we could find. It is a shoppers dream with the headquarters of H&M located there so there seems to be one on every corner. By this stage we were starting to fade so it was back to our hostel for a kip before heading out to dinner.

It was hard to get motivated to head out for dinner but we managed to wander through the city and it was really pretty at night time so it was worth getting up for. Once again it was no Swedish food for us and we headed into a Thai restaurant for a delicious meal. Both food and drink is pretty expensive compared to English prices so it is hard to get used to. I guess if you were living and working there and earning the Krona it would be much better as the city seemed to be full of cafes, restaurants, bars and places to hang out.

The next day we signed up for a free walking tour to get a bit of info about the city. Our tour guide was really informative and over the next few hours we wandered through the city and learned about the monuments, buildings and history of Sweden. We were lucky to get another sunny day so after the tour we headed to some flea markets we had stumbled across on the tour. We trawled through the stalls and found a couple of bargains before setting off to visit the Town Hall which is located right on one of the waterways.

We spent the afternoon chilling out by the river, sunning ourselves on the grass, chatting and people watching. It was a great way to pass the afternoon as we waited for our flight. We headed off about 5pm to the airport and i was sad to say goodbye to such an awesome city. I would love to head back there and check it out with a local guide and a bit more cash so I could splurge on Swedish food. 33 hours just isn’t enough!
