Farewell To London

After nearly five years away from home its time to say goodbye to London and head off on another exciting adventure. There is no doubt in my mind that I will miss this crazy, addictive, fun, busy, tiring city but I am so looking forward to getting home and being close to my family and friends.

I’ve written about what I will and wont miss and all of my favourite things I’ve done while I have been here. I hope my blogging and my summaries have given people an idea of what life is like for an antipodean living abroad in the UK. Moving to London was the single best decision I have ever made in my life and I hope that many more people come over and have the time of their lives too. I want to live vicariously through them!

So now its goodbye to my little flat in Tooting, my great friends, my family and my favourite city. Onwards to three months in South East Asia before settling back into Brisbane life. Farewell London – I will see you again soon I hope!

Top 10 Drinking Establishments In London

There are so many great places to drink in London, you’d have to struggle to stay thirsty. There are so many that I’ve enjoyed during my time here its hard to narrow it down to one list. Any place can be a great place to drink if you have the right people with you and nothing beats your local. If you fancy trying somewhere new I recommend checking these out.

1. Piano bar
I only got to visit this place in my last week in London and I can’t believe I hadn’t been there before! Right across from High Street Kensington station you would be forgiven for walking past the little entrance but once you head upstairs you find a cute little bar with a few tables and of course a piano. The wine list is comprehensive and the food is amazing – get the czech cheese. What makes this place so great is the piano player who sings a broad range of songs and even takes requests. By the end of the night we were all up singing and dancing along. Such a great night out!

Top 10 Things I Wish I Had Done In London

Before this posts sounds too depressing, I just want to say, I don’t regret a single thing about my time in London. These Top 10 are just a few things I wish I had gotten around to, things I meant to do but didn’t have the money/time/motivation to do.

1. Tour of Houses of Parliament

I was lucky enough to go to the Houses of Parliament for Rock The House, a yearly concert on the summer terrace. And once I saw the gorgeous interior I always meant to go back to have a proper tour, learn more about the history, the current political climate and quirky facts about old buildings you always manage to find out.  Just never got around to this one.

2. Lived on the North Side

For those who don’t live in London, there is a bit of a North/South divide when it comes to where you live. As much as I love the South West and its green parks, beautiful terrace houses and proximity to about 90% of my friends, I always kind of thought I’d like to live up North. Angel/Islington/Farringdon would seem like a fab area to me and then I could find out why the North Londoners are so smug about.

3. Gone to Fabric/Ministry of Sound/Big Nightclub

So I’m not much of a clubber. I like pop music and stuff you can sing to so club nights out with the *unnz unnz* isn’t my idea of fun. Still, I would have like to have done it just once. Gone and saw a great DJ, drank too many red bulls, stayed out until the tube ran and danced around with glow sticks.

4. Cocktails at The Savoy (or some equally swanky iconic hotel).

I’ve always wanted to get properly dressed up, in a fancy dress and heels and have cocktails in a established British swanky hotel. The Savoy always appealed because its right near the thames and it would have been a great place to have a Tom Collins or a Bramble or something equally as British sounding.

5. Stalked Celebrities at a Leicester Square movie premiere

I’ve always worked about a 10 minute walk away from Leicester Square so don’t ask my why I never though to pop by when there was a movie premier on and see if I could spot a celebrity. I mean I was here when both the last Harry Potter films were released! Just another thing I never got around to and the only celebrity I’ve ever seen in London was Mischa Barton in a pub!

6. Ice Skated at an outdoor rink

This one I can’t ever do because of a bad knee injury. As much as I would be wary of falling on my bum and breaking my leg, I would give it a go if I could physically do it. Sadly, it would cause me more pain and damage than fun so I’ve always had to sit it out while my friends have done it. The upside is I can always start drinking earlier in the night than them!

7. Pedalos in Hyde Park

I’ve always wanted to take a pedalo out onto the Serpentine in Hyde Park, ideally with a date. Even when my boyfriend and I got together we never seemed to be in Hyde Park together during summer and it always seemed like such a mission to go into Hyde Park, just to do it. Laziness meant I never got to do this one. Maybe one day when I come back for a visit.

8. Been more interested in football

Everyone knows that the Brits are football fanatics and everyone has heard of the big premier league teams. I kind of assumed when I came over, i’d sort of get more into it by osmosis but I didn’t. Although almost every day at work or socially someone brings up a football game and team, I never really made the effort to pick someone to follow and stick with it. It seems like such a big part of british culture that I should have made more of an effort. That said – I don’t really follow AFL either!

9.  Watched the Cambridge VS Oxford Boat Race

For some reason, every year this event sneaks up on me and I always seem to have other plans. I’ve even heard its not that exciting – especially if you didn’t go to Oxford or Cambridge. However, once again its just one of those London tradition things that I feel like I’ve missed out on.

10. Been inside The Gherkin
Sadly I’m not that important to go into the Swiss Bank for an actual reason and unfortunately I never got a chance to go inside during Open London. The year I did Open London, it was closed and every other year I have been away on that weekend. It is just such an iconic part of the skyline I am sorry to miss it.

Top 10 Resources For London Fun

I often get asked by friends ‘Where did you find out about this stuff?’ when I’m dragging them to a new exhibition, making them sit in the nosebleed section for a theatre show, visiting a food truck or walk around the countryside. So I thought I would share my Top 10 Resources for fun in London.

  1. Yplan

This app has led me to discover some great nights out – champagne after dark at the Aquarium, comedy shows and music festivals selling last minute tickets. Its an easy to use app that means you can plan things last minute and book with two clicks on your phone. It also has a referral code so get refering and you can get yourself some free nights out.

Top 10 Favourite Things To Do In London

There are lots of things I love doing in London, and narrowing them down to just 10 was tough. After writing this list I then immediately came up with about 20 more.

  1. Barclays Bike through Hyde Park

I love Hyde Park, its so iconic and busy you always find something interesting happening. Since its MASSIVE, the best way to go through it is on a Barclays Bike. Being the nervous nelly I am, I’d never actually hire a barclays bike to ride on the road so this is the best way for me to spend time in my favourite park and cycle around like a big kid.

Top 10 Coffee Places In London

I love my coffee and I have slowly been working my way through the London Coffee Guide as well as popping into a few places I’ve heard about on the grapevine. Please note this list might also read “Top 10 places to get brunch” as most of them do amazing food too!

  1. Brew

An Antipodean cafe that started in Clapham and has now expanded to four branches across SW London. Working at Brew was actually one of my first jobs when I arrived in London. The coffee is good and they do a flat white brilliantly, but their food menu is also divine. Their sweet corn fritters are amazing!

Top 10 Nights Out In London

During my five years in London I’ve had some amazing nights out. From house parties, to local drinks at the pub that turn into an all nighter. These are my Top 10 nights out.

  1. Blitz Party

There is nothing like dressing up in a 40s tea dress, putting your hair in victory rolls and heading to an underground bunker bar to celebrate the end of the Blitz. It was such a fun night out, the boys look fab in their uniforms, the girls looked pretty in their dresses. We drank cocktails and beer, danced to a swing band and waved union jack flags when the confetti dropped. If you like themed nights out – don’t miss the Blitz Party.

Top 10 Favourite Places To Eat In London

Eating out in London is one of my favourite things to do, so it was pretty hard to come up with just 10 favourites. I’ve probably forgotten some key ones but I can totally recommend any of the below.

  1. Mien Tay

This Vietnamese favourite has been my go to for a place to eat for my whole time here. Both the Battersea and Kingsland Road venues are perfect for a meal with one or two people and big groups. The service is usually pretty quick and efficient and its cheap. You can order a feast and get change for a £20 note. Get the Fresh Rolls, Salt and Pepper Squid, Beef and Lemongrass Vermicelli and the Duck Pancakes

Top 10 Things I Will Not Miss About Living In London

Hopefully thinking about these Top 10 things, will make it a bit easier to leave when that plane takes off at Heathrow.

  1. The Tube

Also featured on the Top 10 Things I Will Miss About London list, it has to also be included in this list. I hate how its so squishy and claustrophobic. I hate how even when I have my head in someone’s armpit and someone’s elbow in my back someone says “can you move down please”. I hate that I have to wait 7 MINUTES for a Morden train. I hate that people happily stand on your feet and smash backpacks into your face while you are sitting down – almost to make you pay for getting that seat. I hate that metro readers flick pages at you when they turn the page. I hate that on a Sunday at 2pm it is still rammed. I hate that a slight signal failure or delay creates chaos. Ohhh London Underground – I love to hate you and hate that I love you.

Top 10 Things I Will Miss About Living In London

For my last ten days in London, I’m going to be posting a new Top 10 every day. To summarize and celebrate my five years living in this amazing city.

  1. Buying fresh flowers

I love how there are little flower stalls set up on almost every high street.  As you pass you can pick up a bunch of tulips (my favourite flower by the way) for £3, or some daffodils for £1. I love that most supermarkets have a section with lovely bouquets that look just as good as a florist bunch (and last just as long).
